Zone 8a fall yard care: lawn and garden to-dos
Fall is the most important season for a Zone 8a yard. Warm soil and cool air make it the best window of the year to seed, plant, and set up next spring.
Lawn
- Overseed fescue in mid-September, while soil is warm and nights are cool; core-aerate first for seed-to-soil contact.
- Apply a fall fertilizer to cool-season turf to build roots for winter.
- Keep mowing until top growth stops, then drop the height slightly for the last cut.
Beds and borders
- Plant spring-flowering bulbs (daffodils, tulips, alliums) after the first cool nights.
- Fall is the best window to plant or move trees and shrubs; roots keep growing after the tops go dormant.
- Divide spring-blooming perennials and cut back spent summer growth.
Planting
- Sow cool-season vegetables (brassicas, greens, garlic) and set out pansies and violas.
- Manage falling leaves; shred and compost them or use them to mulch beds.
