Zone 8a winter yard care: lawn and garden to-dos
Zone 8a winters are mild but real. Winter is for structure work, protection, and planning, so the yard is ready the moment spring arrives.
Lawn
- Mow rarely, and stay off frosted turf to avoid crushing the blades.
- Sharpen the mower blade and service equipment during the down time.
Beds and borders
- Dormant-prune deciduous trees and summer-blooming shrubs in late winter, before buds swell.
- Protect tender plants ahead of hard freezes, and keep mulch topped up over root zones.
- Apply dormant oil to fruit trees and roses on a mild, dry day.
Plan ahead
- Send off a soil test so amendments are ready before spring.
- Plant bare-root trees and roses in late winter, and start slow seeds indoors by late February.
